Must know things for Tourists about Panna National Park and Tiger Reserve
Panna National Park is spread across the Panna and
Chhatarpur districts in northeastern Madhya Pradesh. Created in 1981, Panna
covers approx 666 sq km and was declared a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in
1994 and is major tourist highlight of Madhya
Pradesh Tour Packages.
Located about 32 kilometers from the World Heritage Site of
Khajuraho, it attracts not only Khajuraho-bound visitors, but also droves of
wildlife enthusiasts making repeated visits to the Park. Panna received the
Award of Excellence in 2007 as the 'best maintained national park of India' by
the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
Panna has an enviable reputation as a Tiger Reserve. With
its high density of tigers, it rarely disappoints those coming to see the big
cat! It is the twenty-second Tiger Reserve of India and the fifth in Madhya
Pradesh.
Ransacked by poachers a few years ago, Panna had lost all of
its tigers but after successful translocation and breeding, the Reserve has a
success story to write home about.
The river Ken, a perennial river, running through Panna
National Park is one of the cleanest waterways in India. Characterized by
extensive plateaus and gorges, the beautiful natural forests of this Park have
a mix of dry and mixed deciduous forest - full of boswellia, bamboo and dhok.
Apart from the tiger sightings, the Park is also sought
after for its spectacular panorama dotted with ancient rock paintings believed
to be around 2,000 years old. Old relics from the Gondwana period are scattered
all over adding drama and history to the picturesque scenery.
Though the majestic and elusive tiger is the main attraction
here, the forests of Panna also house the leopard, wild dog, hyena, sloth bear,
herds of nilgai, sambhar, chital and chinkara. Snakes such as the cobra, Russell's
viper, saw scaled viper and common krait have been sighted.
The forest is rich in avian life, with a checklist of over
200 species including three globally endangered species of vultures - Indian
White-backed vulture, Indian vulture and the red-headed vulture. Other
threatened species which can be spotted in the park are the black-headed ibis,
black-necked stork, painted stork, ferruginous duck and the grey-headed fish
eagle.
The rich avian and faunal life of this picturesque Tiger
Reserve and National Park, along with its proximity to the world-renowned
Khajuraho temples has helped turn Parma into a popular tourist destination.
Best Time to Visit: November-June
