The Devi Garh Fort Palace in the village of Delwara lies in an area that forms one of the three main passes into the valley of Udaipur. Reghudev Singh II started the construction of the Fort Palace in the 1760's. Most of Shivpuri's short known history is connected to the Scindia royal family. Being easily accessible from Gwalior, Shivpuri with its luxuriant forests and undulating hills was a natural choice as the summer capital of the Scindias. Being avid shikaris (hunters) the Scindias developed Shivpuri as a royal game preserve, making it famous for the abundance of wildlife, especially tigers. During the Raj, it was considered a prestigious sporting achievement necessary of every Viceroy or high ranking English aristocrat, to 'Bag a tiger in Gwalior State'. Unfortunately, as with anything that is overdone, the tigers were finally hunted out of existence in the region.  The Madhav National Park, which covers an area of 156 sq.km, does provide a glimpse of this beautiful lost world, but alas it is a little glimpse. The park is partly covered with wooded hills, and it supports the chinkara, cheetal (spotted deer), nilgai (blue bull), some sambar and also black buck.
