Must know Travel Information on Shivpuri Madhya Pradesh

Most of Shivpuri's short known history is connected to the Scindia royal family. Being easily accessible from Gwalior, Shivpuri with its luxuriant forests and undulating hills was a natural choice as the summer capital of the Scindias. Being avid shikaris (hunters) the Scindias developed Shivpuri as a royal game preserve, making it famous for the abundance of wildlife, especially tigers.
During the Raj, it was considered a prestigious sporting achievement necessary of every Viceroy or high ranking English aristocrat, to 'Bag a tiger in Gwalior State'. Unfortunately, as with anything that is overdone, the tigers were finally hunted out of existence in the region.

The Madhav National Park, which covers an area of 156 sq.km, does provide a glimpse of this beautiful lost world, but alas it is a little glimpse. The park is partly covered with wooded hills, and it supports the chinkara, cheetal (spotted deer), nilgai (blue bull), some sambar and also black buck. One of the man made attractions of this park is the George Castle, situated on the highest point. It was built by Jivaji Rao Scindia to host King George on a visit that was ultimately cancelled. The pride of Shivpuri is the elaborate complex that contains the magnificent white marble Chhatris (cenotaphs) of the Scindia family. In the evening the hush is broken by the sound of music, as artists of the Gwalior gharana render classical ragas. Set in a formal Mughal style garden complete with water channels and resting pavilions, these charming Chhatris ensure that the royal ambience lives on in Shivpuri.
