A 16th century bastioned city is
Udaipur, named after its founder Maharaja Udai Singh who was founded the city
in the year 1559. Udaipur, the city of lakes. Sunrise and the Venice of East,
stands in a valley amid green hills, on the bank of the wide lake Pichola of
steel blue waters with little Island. The city was surrounded by a bastioned
wall enclosing beautiful gardens towards the south. The western side is bounded
by the beautiful Pichola lake and to the west of city stands Sajjangarh on a
hill rising 335 metre above Fateh Sagar lake, commanding a picturesque view.
The white marble palaces rise
from little Islands in the lake turning Udaipur into one of the most romantic
cities in India. Crowning the ridge, on which the city clusters along the
shores of the lake is the palace of the former rulers of Udaipur. Within the
palace are magnificent mosaics, floors inlaid with tiles of rare beauty and
roof gardens with lovely views of the panorama below.
What to see-
City Palace:
An imposing edifice of granite and marble is the city
palace lies at the southern end of the city. There is hardly any palace in
India which possesses the grandeur and splendour of Udaipur's city palace. It
has been compared with the Windsor Palaces of London for their elegance.
Measuring 1500 ft. North-South in
length and 600 to 800ft, in width these palaces were built at various periods.
The east terrace affords a panoramic view of the city and of Lake Palace,
Pichola Lake and widespread landscape of absorbing charm in the west. The
oldest portion Raaj Angan was built by the founder Maharana Udai Singh
(1537-1572). The main entrance is through the Tripolia, the triple gate and the
eight carved marble arches, the Maharanas were weighed in gold and silver which
was later distributed among the poor as a pious act to ward off the evil
influences. Among the beautiful palaces within are Suraj Gokhada, Badi Mahal.
Chhoti Chitrasala, Badi Chitrasala, Manak Mahal, Krishna & Shiv Vilas and
Mor Chowk. The brilliant mosaic of Peacocks in the walls are excellent. They
are five Peacocks, each in a niche,-which are unbelievably unbelievable pieces
of art.
Pichola lake :
A creation of the 14th century, the Pichola lake is
over 4 Km long and 3 Km broad, bounded by splendid hills, bathing ghats, temples
and palaces. It is on the westren side of the Udaipur city and palaces are
situated aside it toward south. The dam of the Pichola lake was originally
built by a Banjara in the reigon of Maharana Lakha. The dam was known as Badi
Pol. Maharana Udai Singh strengthened the dam by making it of solid masonary
and also from time to time repaired and strengthened the dam further. The two
island palaces Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas (Lake palace) set in the lake are

Jag Niwas:
Amid the Pichola lake, is Jag niwas about 800 ft away
from the banks on a four acre spread and wholly built of marble and granite. It
was originally built by Maharana Jagat Singh II in 1754. It has undergone much
improvements from time to time and stands as a most fascinating and alluring
'Lake Palace Hotel' today. Walls representing mosaic, ancient paintings and the
luxury equip of beautiful fountains, reservoirs. furnitures, columns etc. win
it a mellow adore by visitors.
Jag Mandir:
Originally started by Maharana Karan Singh and take
its present name from Maharana Jagat Singh I (1628-1652) who made several
additions to it. It is said that this was where Prince Khurram later Emperor
Shahjahan, builder of the Taj Mahal sought refuge while in revolt against his
father Emperor Jahangir.
Jagdish Temple:
The largest and most venerated temple in Udaipur
is Jagdish temple. It was built in 1651 at a cost of 1.5 Million rupees by
Maharana Jagat Singh. It is a fine example of Indo-Aryan architecture in state
and is decorated with bold figured friezes. Situated in the proximity of 175

Saheliyon-Ki-Bari:
Adjoining the east embankment of Fateh Sagar
lake is Sahelion-Ki-Bari built for the maids of honour. It was constructed by
Maharana Sangram Singh in the middle of 18th century. This fascinating garden
has an ornamental pool, delicately carved chhatris or cenotaphs of Paleva (soft
black stone). Surrounded by beautiful fountains, the garden has a lotus pool
studdded with fountains and guarded by four elephants each cut out of a single
piece of marble. The fountains when running give a soothing and delightful
sense of ran.
Maharana Pratap Smarak:
A memorial to Maharana Pratap is Pratap
Smarak located at Moti Magri hill overlooking Fateh Sagar lake. It is one of
the most beautiful and romantic spots in Udaipur. -The hill has been laid over
with flowering and ornamental shrubs, trees and herbs, fountains which give the
visitor an overall shoothing. A large bronzealloy staute of Maharana Pratap
riding on his favourite and faithful horse Chetak has been mounted on an
elevated platform. Japanese rock-cutgarden is a part of this complex. Agrandeur
of scenery of the wide spread lands cape, a distant view of the valley, city
and the spread of the lake Fateh Sagar on the western aspects, all keep the
visitor spellbound.
Lake Fateh Sagar:
Surrounded by hills on three sides and Moti
Magari on the other side is Fateh Sagar lake originally credited to Maharana
Jai Singh who built it in 1678 A.D. but was destroyed due to heavy rains.
Maharana Fateh Singh reconstructed it in 1754 at a cost of Rs. 6,00,000 and
gave it its present form and hence renamed after him. It has, on average. 4 sq.
Km of spread and 25 ft. depth. Boating facilities available.
Nehru Island Park:
This island park is situated amid the lake
Fatehsagar and about 4 1/2 acres in spread, comprises of many pyramid shaped
and channel type fountains. It is a good picnic spot. In the North west of the
park is a bridge and a boat shaped restaurant. There is coloured illumination
at night.
Sukhadia Circle:

This circle is situated in front of Railway
Training School. It is converted into a pond. Its diameter is 200 ft. The pond
has a 42 ft. high fountain and a small green park all around it embedded with
beautiful flowers.
Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal:
The museum of Bhartiya Lok Kala mandal
is situated near Mohata park and houses an interesting collection of folk musical
instruments, dresses, armaments, paintings, masks, dolls, folk deities and a
variety of puppets. Puppet shows of short duration organized on request. This
internationally famed organization of folk-art is playing an important role in
preserving and developing Indian folk art.
Sajjan niwas garden:

One of the most beautiful rose gardens in
western India is Sajan niwas garden which is famous by the name of Gulabbagh
and covers about 100 acres area. It was laid out by Maharana Sajan Singh
(1859-74). It has well planned tarred roads, well maintained spacious lawns,
zoo, a mini children's train Aravali Express first in state and fifth in India
and reading room cum library with a rich collection of old books. The garden
abounds in green trees, flowering etc.
