The daily life of the Hindus of Jaisalmer, is governed by
religious customs and traditions that they follow reverently. Jaisalmer can be
called a city of temples for in every street, garden or palace there is a
temple, an image of a god or a shrine.
Mandir Palace, the residence of the royal family has fifteen
temples, nearly all of which are open to the public and worship is performed
daily.
The fort has eleven ancient temples. The temple of Annapurna
Devi is perhaps the oldest, dating back to the 14th century. The most important
temple in the fort is the Lakshminathji ka Mandir. An ancient legend is
at-tached to the idol, according to which, a cow once fell in the Jesloo Kua
and when they pulled her out, along with it came an idol of Krishna. This idol
was installed at the temple and has real gold ornaments, the food to the Lord
is served in silver utensils and a small gold gate protects the idol. All major

The Chamunda Devi Mandir in Dussehra chowk has an elegant
facade. Other temples in the chowk are the Adi Narain Mandir and Ghatayali Devi
Mandir. The Swangiya Devi temple in the fort is only open to the royal family.
A small exquisite Shiva temple stands in the gardens of Mool
Sagar. Amar Sagar and Bada Bagh all have ancient Hindu temples. Besides these
there are seven Devi temples that surround Jaisalmer and are visited by the
people on specific days.
