Things to know before you go to South India Destinations !!
Wayanad /Tranquil- A
Plantation Hideaway
A game preserve since
the 1920s, Wayanad was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1973. Spanning an area
of 344 sq.kms this sanctuary is contiguous with Bandipur and Nagarhole National
Parks of Karnataka and Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu. All four sanctuaries
together make up the larger Niligiri Biosphere Reserve, one of the most
important conservation zones in India.
Most people visit
Wayanad to enjoy its wealth of wildlife and cultural heritage. But since the
millennium there is another attraction, a most inviting one, the Tranquil
Hideaway. Located within a 400 acre coffee and pepper plantation is a sprawling
bungalow with an old world charm. Here the resident director Victor Dey and his
wife Jini, offer guests a home stay experience in serene and scenic
surroundings. The bungalow itself is very tastefully designed and it reveals
the passion that its occupants and owners have for elegant and dignified
architecture and the 8 well-appointed guest rooms are very comfortable and
named after various spices. There is also an outdoors azure glass tiled
swimming pool and an ayurvedic massage centre. The great thing about Tranquil
is the warm hospitality. You never get the feeling that you are in a resort,
instead you feel that you are staying with a friend who owns a coffee
plantation with a lovely house in it. Also Visit - Andaman Tour Packages

The surroundings are
equal to the delights of the home stay. You can see coffee bushes, pepper
vines, cardamom plants, coconut and banana trees, existing with the flora and
fauna of the region. And that's not all. Running across the 400-acre plantation
are many tracks ideal for walks and bird watching. If you can brave the
ferocious beauty of the tough trails, you must go on a trek. Breathe in the
refreshing air, whistle with the wind and carry home timeless memories.
Ooty / Udhagamandalam
Also referred to as
the queen of hill stations, Ooty or Udhagamandalam is situated at a height of
2240 metres. Located in the Nilgiri Mountains, Ooty was developed by the
British as a summer retreat in the 19th century. It is famous for its colonial
architecture, churches, rolling hills covered with pine and eucalyptus,
botanical gardens with over 650 different species of plants, and its tea
plantations. The verdant hillsides are decorated with tea gardens and some of
the tea grown here rivals that of Darjeeling.

Over the years, Ooty's
popularity has grown and it is now the most popular hill station in South
India. Interestingly, Ooty still retains many social norms associated with the
British Raj. The Ooty Club is very exclusive and well preserved. The building
was erected in 1830 and Colonel Sir Neville Chamberlain invented the game of
snooker here in 1875.
Ooty is a good place
to get away from the heat and dust of the plains. The panoramic views, the
botanical gardens, the wind that whips your hair about as you ramble along
streets that dip and rise delightfully and pleasing views that surprise you
unexpectedly all make Ooty a picturesque and charming holiday destination.
Coonoor, the sister
hill-station of Ooty has a slight warmer and drier climate than Ooty, though it
is only 17 km away. Situated at a height of 1850 metres, Coonoor is the second
largest hill-station in the Nilgiris and like its sister city, it also has old
churches, colonial buildings, boarding schools and a golf course. Ooty and
Coonoor, attract a large number of Indian tourists in season, and it is best to
visit them in the off-season if you want to avoid the crowds and the
congestion.
Coimbatore
The rich black cotton
soil and good supply of water has resulted in agriculture flourishing in the
area around Coimbatore. Cotton is the main crop cultivated here and its
sizeable growth has served as a foundation for the establishment of Combatore's
successful textile industry. This has entitled it to be called the 'Manchester
of South India' and it is also referred to as the 'Cotton City'. The first
textile mill was set up in Coimbatore way back in 1888 and now it has over a
hundred of them. Coimbatore is also known for its manufacture of various
engineering goods, and recently Narain Karthikeyan made his hometown world
famous, by being the first Indian to race in Formula One. With its own airport
and railway station, Coimbatore is a popular entry and exit point to other
parts of South India.
